Memoirs
My Father had Nothing, Yet He Lacked Nothing

Mawlana Ridwanur Rahman bin Hamidur Rahman

My father Professor Hadrat Hamidur Rahman passed away a few days ago. The Ulama have observed him over an extended period of time. Essentially, he lived his life in accordance with the hadith:
الْكَيِّسُ مَنْ دَانَ نَفْسَه وَعَمِلَ لِمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ
"He is the wise, who knows himself and works for the Hereafter."
I believe, my father exemplifies the wise referred to as 'Qayyish' in the hadith. I express this not as his child but as an honest acknowledgment, speaking from the heart.
Once, Hakeem Akhtar Saheb (may Allah have mercy on him), a Pakistani alim famous for tazkia and suluk, called me to his personal room and asked, 'Does your father have any bungalow?' I replied, 'Hadrat, my father doesn't own any land, let alone any bungalow.' Hadhrat was aware of this but still asked the question to make others listen. There were big engineers and educated individuals present in front of him. Then, Hadhrat addressed them and said, 'Inke walid saheb bahut bare mutawakkileen mein se hain.' His father is one of those great personalities who put trust upon Allah.
My father never used to save money. Many big industrialists and rich people would come to him, but Abba never looked at anyone's money even for religious works. We know that the believer needs money for his religious works. However, the condition of a true believer is that he neither leaves money, nor does he depend on it, rather, he depends on Allah.
They put trust in their Lord.
I saw this quality in my father. He never thought of asking for anything from anyone. Once, he went to someone for a loan. That individual answered to him, 'Who told you to establish a madrasa with a loan?'
It was very saddening. He had to pay the madrasa's house rent the next day. However, he continued reciting at home:
اَلَيْسَ اللهُ بِكَافٍ عَبْدَهٗ
'Is not Allah sufficient for His servant?' (Surah Az-zumar, 62:36).
Meanwhile, one of his students came. He had completed a project and earned five to six lakh Taka. He approached Abba and said, 'Sir, keep this money with you as Qard Hasana. Utilize it for whatever you need.
Alhamdulillah, our house was always bustling with guests. Once, during a special occasion, a chicken was prepared, and as we gathered for the meal, I requested a large piece of chicken roast from Amma. However, my brother Mustafiz asked  Amma, "Amma, what are you eating?" At that time, my father guided me, saying, "Look, you're asking for a big roast for yourself, but Mustafiz is concerned about his mother. Instead of focusing only on yourself, you should have asked about your mother." This kind of guidance was a common practice for Abba. He always stressed that charity begins at home.
I want to mention that hadith again: 'Wise is the one who knows himself and works for the Hereafter.' Abba didn't run a factory but ran the business of the Hereafter. His belief in Allah was so profound that he was confident Allah would surely make him successful in his endeavor. He never focused on anyone else's wealth; his gaze was fixed solely on Allah. Trust and confidence in Allah were his capital. Thus, he lived his entire life. He possessed nothing, yet lacked nothing. Alhamdu Lillah, my father had nothing, yet he lacked nothing.

Whenever I look at his life, I remember this verse_
Certainly, the believers are those whose hearts are filled with awe when (the name of) Allah is mentioned; and when His verses are recited to them, it makes them more developed in faith; and they put their trust in their Lord. Surah Anfal (8): 2

I could not have said this if my father were alive, because, if he had heard, he would have taken the microphone from me.
Another characteristic of Abba was that he did more than he said throughout his life. His actions spoke louder than his words. Abba was in the hospital for a few days before his death. After he was released from hospital, he went to Manohardi to attend a religious gathering in a madrasa. There he listened to everyone's speech silently. The next day, there was another religious gathering. I observed that Abba was listening attentively to the speeches.

Despite being an educated individual, he travelled across Bangladesh in his old age, enduring ailing health while lying in a wheelchair in the car. He sacrificed everything for Deen, despite growing up in a materialistic environment and among materialistic-minded people. Moreover, he provided religious education to all of his children in the Madrasa instead of opting for worldly education.
That's why I often say, I didn't fully comprehend Abba's work during his lifetime, and even now, I do not understand it completely. However, what I do understand is that this is the work that will benefit us in the Hereafter. May Allah Ta'ala grant us the guidance to follow in his footsteps and may He grant Abba the highest place in Jannatul Firdaus. May his grave be illuminated with divine light. Ameen.
