Merits of Some Surahs and Verses

Mawlana Muhammad Tawheedul Islam Tayeib

Being able to recite the Holy Qur'an correctly is a matter of great fortune for a believer. This is a great gift from Almighty Allah.

Allah Ta'ala has preserved the Qur'an in 'al-Lawh al-Mahfuz'. Then through Hadhrat Jibraeel Alaihis Salam, He revealed it upon His most beloved, last prophet, Hadhrat Muhammad Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. The Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam himself recited this Quran. His companions recited it. Then the great scholars of Ummah recited it through the ages. The Qur'an has been preserved as it was recited by the Messenger of Allah, the Companions and the beloved servants of Allah through the ages.

There are one hundred and fourteen surahs and six thousand two hundred and thirty six verses in the Quran. Each surah, each verse and each letter of the Quran has its merits, but there are also some special verses and surahs that have some special virtues and rewards. Here are some special virtues for some special verses and surahs_

Surah Fatiha

Hadhrat Abu Sayed Ibnul Mu`alla RA. said, one day I was praying in the mosque. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to me:

Before you leave the mosque, I will teach you a Surah which is the greatest Surah of the Qur'an... Then he said, (It is) Alhamdu Lillah Rabbil Alameen i.e. Surah Fatiha. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 4474

Hadhrat Abu Huraira RA. narrated, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam said,

When the imam says غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ ‌وَلا ‌الضَّالِّينَ then you say 'Amin'. (Because the angels then also say Amin). One whose Amin coincides with the amin of angels, his past sins are forgiven. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 782, 6402

Ayatul Kursi

Hadhrat Ubai Ibn Kaab RA. Narrated, one day the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, pointed at Abul Munzir and said, O Abul Munzir, do you know which verses of the Quran that you have memorized is the best?

Abul Munzir said, I said, Allah and His Messenger know best.

He said again, O Abul Munzir, do you know which of the verses of the Book of Allah that you have memorized is the best?

Then I said,

(This verse is the best).

Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) patted my chest and said, May knowledge be easy for you, O Abul Munzir. Sahih Muslim, Hadith 810

Hazrat Abu Huraira RA. narrated in a long hadith that he had a conversation with a stranger. Then the stranger said,

When you go to sleep at night, recite Ayatul Kursi. Then an angel from Allah Ta'ala will protect you until morning. As a result, Satan will not be able to come near you.

After hearing the whole story, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

He was (Iblis) Satan. He always lies but this time told the truth. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5010

The last two verses of Surah Baqarah

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas RA. said, one day Hadhrat Jibrael (peace be upon him) was sitting near the Prophet (peace be upon him). He raised his head when he heard the door opening from above. Then Jibrael alaihis salam said, This is a door of the heaven. It was opened for the first time today. This door has never been opened before.

An angel descended from there.

He said, this angel has never come to earth before today.

The angel gave salam and said,

Receive the glad tidings of two Noors, which have been given only to you. No Prophet was given before you. Surah Fatiha and end of Surah Baqarah. Any letter you read from them will be given to you as requested. Sahih Muslim, Hadith 806

Hadhrat Abu Masood RA. Narrated from, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said

For one who recites the last two verses of Surah Baqarah at night, it will be sufficient for him (as a good deed at night and a protector from all evils). Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5009

Surah Kahf

Hadhrat Abu Darda RA. narrated, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,

Whoever memorizes the first ten verses of Surah Kahf he will be saved from Dajjal's Fitnah. Sahih Muslim, Hadith 809; Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 4323

This virtue has been mentioned about the last ten verses of Surah Kahf in another narration. See, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 786

Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri RA. narrated, The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever recites Surah Kahf on Friday it will be a light for him until the next Friday. Mustadrake Hakem, Hadith 3392; Sunan Kubra Baihaqi, Hadith 5996

Surah Yasin

Hadhrat Jundub Narrated, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said

Whoever recites Surah Yaseen at night for the pleasure of Allah Ta'ala, he will be forgiven. Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 2574, Tafsir Ibn kathir 6/562

The hadith is Salih Lil Amal

Hadhrat Ata Ibn Abi Rabah said, this hadith reached me that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

A person who recites Surah Yaseen at the beginning of the day will have all his needs fulfilled. Sunane Daremi 2/549

Surah Mulk

Hadhrat Abu Huraira RA. narrated, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said

The Qur'an has a sura consisting of thirty verses. The surah will intercede for a person who regularly recites that surah until he is forgiven. That Surah is, Tabarakallazi Biadihil Mulk. Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 1400; Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith 2891; Sahih Ibn Hibban, Hadith 787

Imam Tirmidhi said, this hadith is Hasan.

Hadhrat Anas Narrated, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said

The Qur'an has a sura consisting of thirty verses. A person who recites that surah regularly it will argue for him until he will enter the heaven. That is Surah Mulk. Almuzamul Awsat Tabarani, Hadith 3654; Al-Ahadisul Mukhtarah Lil Maqdisi, Hadith 1738

The hadith is Hassan.  Majmauz zawayed 7/127

Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Masud RA. said,

Whoever recites Surah Mulk every night, Allah Ta'ala will save him from the punishment of the grave. During the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we used to call this Surah as the 'Preventer of the Punishment of the Grave'. Whoever recites this surah every night he recites a lot and done good deeds. Sunan Kubra Nasa'i, Hadith 10547; Almujamul Kabir Tabrani, Hadith 10254; Hakm in Mustadra, Hadith 3839

The hadith is Hassan in sh Allah. - Majmauz zawayed 7/127

Surah Ikhlas

Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri RA. Narrated, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,

Can any of you recite a third of the Qur'an at night?

The matter seemed difficult to them. They said, O Messenger of Allah! Who can do it? Then he said, Surah Ikhlas is one third of the Qur'an. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5015

Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas

Hadhrat Ayesha Narrated,

When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) comes to bed at night, he would recite Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falak and Surah Nas and blow on both palms (together). Then with those two hands, he would wipe the face and the whole body as far as possible. Ayesha RA. said, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fell ill, he used to order me to do it (reciting the Surahs and blowing on the palms of the hands and wiping the body). Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5748

In another tradition,

He used to wipe the whole body as far as possible with both hands. He used to start wiping from the front of the head and face of the body. He did this three times. Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5017

Hadhrat Abdullah Ibn Khubaib RA. Narrated, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

Surah Ikhlas, Surah Falaq and Surah Nas will be enough for you (in protection) from all troubles and evils. - Jame Tirmidhi, Hadith 3575; Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadith 5082

The hadith is Hassan.

An important note

Some vitues of some special surahs are mentioned above and it is enough for now. We will recite these surahs and verses to obtain the merits and virtues described in the hadith. However, more importantly, we should recite the whole Qur'an with tajwid and tartil, with tadabbur and tafakkur, so that we may receive guidance from the Qur'an in every aspect of life. Especially, those who are capable of reciting the Qur'an with understanding, they should be more careful about this. And those who are not able at present, should also try to understand the Quran after learning Tilawat correctly.

Allah said,

(O Messenger!) This is a blessed Book, which We have sent down to you, that men may reflect upon its verses, and that men of understanding may take advice. Surah Saffat (38): 29

Huzaifa RA. said, while reminiscing the recitation of the Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam-

He recited slowly. When he reached a verse that spoke of glorifying Allah (SWT), he glorified Him. When he reached a verse that spoke of supplication, he made supplication. When he reached a verse that spoke of seeking refuge with Allah, he sought refuge with Him. Sahih Muslim, Hadith 772

May Allah grant us tawfiq to recite like this. Amin.
