A Wrong Name
Abdul Kalam
The name of Abdul Kalam is heard in this Indian subcontinent. It means the slave of speech. It should not be anyone's name.
‘Abd means a servant or slave. We are servants of Allah alone. So it is not right to name someone with the word of ‘Abd except adding it with Allah.
Some of the Companions had such names. Allah's Messenger, may peace be upon him, changed their names.
The name of a Companion was Abdul Hajar (the Servant of the Stone). When the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam heard that he was called Abdul Hajar, he called him and said, what is your name?
He said, Abdul Hajar.
Then the Prophet said, "Rather, you are Abdullah (Allah's servant). —Al-Adabul Mufrad, Hadith 811; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaiba, Hadith 25901
The name of the famous Companion Abdur Rahman Ibn ‘Awf was Abdu ‘Amr (the Servant of ‘Amr). In some narrations, his name was mentioned Abdul Ka'ba (Servant of the Ka'ba). After accepting Islam, the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam changed his name to Abdur Rahman (the Servant of Rahman - Servant of Allah). —Mustadrake Hakim, Hadith 7731, 5335; al-Mujam al-Kabir, Tabarani, Hadith 253, 254
